What is a Doula?

The word “doula”comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves women.” Today, doulas around the world are professionals who are trained and experienced in listening, supporting, advocating for, respecting, and educating families through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

A recent Cochrane review “Continuous Support for Women in Labor” showed that women who received the consistent care of a doula through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period experienced:

‚Äč

  • 40% reduction of cesarean sections

  • Increased instances of spontaneous vaginal births

  • Reduction in the need for pharmacological pain medication

  • Reduced rates of labor induction and augmentation

  • Labors that were 40 minutes shorter on average

  • Reduction in forceps and vacuum-assisted births

  • Babies with higher Apgar scores following birth

  • Higher rates of breastfeeding at six weeks postpartum

  • Overall feelings of support and wellness during the postpartum period

  • Lower rates of postpartum depression and anxiety by almost 35%

  • Feeling an increased sense of bonding with their babies and partners

Our Mission:
Since the dawn of time, birth has been an event attended and supported by wise elders who provided space and loving support to women as they made the rite of passage into motherhood. Ancient cultures all over the world recognized this critical period as a profound time of growth, transformation, and nurturing.

I like to think of myself as a bridge – a bridge between a new family and their fears, between modern maternal care and ancient practices, between a new mom and her belief in herself. At The Village Doula it is our aim to bring back the ancient tradition of women supporting women through the transition that is birth and the postpartum period.
